A case in point would be the 1970 nomination of G. Harrold Carswell for justice of the Supreme court. The ABA (American Bar Association) stated unequivocally that Carswell was an incompetent jurist and not qualified to serve as a supreme court justice. Our conservative champion of prairie egalitarianism, United States Senator, Roman Rhuska of Nebraska, came to Carswell's defense stating in no uncertain terms that "[e]ven if he were mediocre, there are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers. They are entitled to a little representation, aren't they, and a little chance? We can't have all Brandeises Frankfurters and Cardozos.” Go figure. . .
