Ernie Awards
Meredith Burgmann’s annual Ernie Awards for chauvinism were held last night at Macquarie street. I am pleased to announce the winners here:
The gold Ernie goes to… P&O Cruises!
P&O also picked up the silver Ernie in the industrial category.
The political silver Ernie goes to The Hon. Bill Heffernan with his comment about future PM Julia Gillard:
Anyone who chooses to remain deliberately barren …they’ve got no idea what life’s about.
Nice one Bill, still waiting for you yourself to fall pregnant to show us what it’s all about.
In the media category, the silver Ernie goes to Newcastle Herald reporter Jeff Corbett for his report about how NASA requires that a male engineer be on board the space shuttle “in case anything goes wrong”. Cult leader Tom Cruise picked up the celebrity gong (The “Fred”) with his insight:
I’ve got Katie tucked away so no one will get to her until my child is born … [Katie's] life from now on was going to be about being a mother. I’m not giving her the chance to turn into another Nicole.
Nicole’s ten times the woman that Katie will ever be. Sorry Tom, you lucked out there.
Surprisingly enough, no awards went to perennial achiever Tony Abbott. Don’t worry Tony, I’ll still send you hate mail on your birthday.

Where to begin? How about with reading comprehension? Nowhere did I ever say rape was a gift from God.
However, if God is the only giver of life, it follows that a child is a gift from God no matter what the circumstances are, and that God is capable of working even rape for our good.
Or would everyone be happier with a God that leaves us miserable and imparts to us nothing good through something like rape? Yeah, that sounds much better.

Mr Beckman, you should read my blog. I’ve come across plenty of people such as yourself. I write in honour of people like you, because I find your distorted views of the world hilarious.
I think the world would be a happier place if someone like me could sit with you over a beer (if indeed you drink) and discuss the amazing mental gymnastics required for you to keep you bleatings consistent. Unfortunately, you are on such a moral highhorse that I don’t think this would be possible.

No, I do not own a gun; have never needed one. I’m not opposed to them, if that’s what you are implying. Even the apostles were told to own a sword even at the expense of the clothes off their own backs, after all. Now that’d be neat to own, a sword. Would make a great conversation & mantle piece.
Anyway, what kind of mental gymnastics are you implying I’m using? To what are you specifically referring to? And how is it inconsistent with the rest of my worldview? Being inconsistent with another’s worldview doesn’t bug me in the slightest.
That being said, you’re welcome to drop by the IRC channel I started; 9pm on Fridays (GMT-5) is the weekly chat time. There won’t be any beer, but our channel bot serves ice cold Coke, pizza, and spicy tacos…. Or something to that effect.
